Michael J. Gaffney is the Acting Director of WSU Extension and former Director of Washington State University’s Division of Governmental Studies and Services (DGSS), an outreach effort of  WSU Extension that provides applied research, consultation, and training for governmental agencies, communities and non-profits throughout the Northwest.

Before joining WSU 22 years ago, Mike was an attorney in both private practice and the U.S. Air Force after having earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics as well as his Juris Doctor from the University of Idaho. His research interests include emergency response, social capital, volunteerism, disaster preparedness, research methodology, ethics, biased policing and profiling, democratization, collaborative processes, community-oriented policing, hazard mitigation planning, and resident-government interaction. He is also the Director of  WSU Extension’s Community and Economic Development Program Unit, and is Chief of the Law Enforcement Mountain Operations School.
