Peter King is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Association of Washington Cities (AWC), a not-for-profit organization providing advocacy, education, and services to Washington’s 281 cities and towns. In that role, he also serves as CEO of AWC’s three affiliated corporations including the AWC Employee Benefit Trust, the AWC Center for Quality Communities Foundation, and the AWC Risk Management Services Agency (RMSA). Prior to returning to his native Washington and joining AWC in 2015, he served as CEO for three local government-related associations including the American Public Works Association (APWA) in Washington, DC (1998 -2015), Colorado Counties, Inc. in Denver, Colorado (1992-1998) and the League of Iowa Cities in Des Moines, Iowa (1987-1992).
Peter’s experience includes serving as CEO and/or governing board member for over a dozen organizations with members spanning cities, counties, special districts, and public works/engineering professionals throughout North America. He has served on the board of directors of the National League of Cities (NLC), Public Technology Institute (PTI), and Iowa Public Agency Investment Trust (IPAIT), among others. He was actively engaged in the formation of the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI), a not-for-profit organization providing a sustainability rating system for all civil infrastructure globally. He currently sits on the board of directors of the NLC Mutual Insurance Company.
Peter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Washington State University, and a Master of Public Administration from Seattle University. He and his wife, Lynn, a retired medical and scientific research publishing executive, live in Lacey, Washington.
